I bought Vegas 9 from Videoguys in November and it came with zip documentation except the cryptic CD manual that Sony ought not include. So I was happy to see this book available. I am new to video although I've worked with digital audio for years and stills in Producer.
Every page of this book has useful information that has brought me up to speed on Vegas. I pretty much know what I want to do with the software, but finding it in the manual is impossible -- such as how do you separate a video and audio track? I spent hours looking for the answer in the documentation; I had it in minutes with the Vegad Pro 9 Workshop. The only negative is the book does not cover DVD Architect. I thought the chapters on the DVD included with the book would cover that, but they are chapters that are really outdated and talk about DV and the future of HD and versions 5 and 6 of Vegas.
Overall, the DVD resources aren't that great, but the book stands on its own. Highly recommended for novice and pro alike. I've been using Sony Vegas 7. I ordered this book because although I feel that I know the program well, I always felt that I could improve my knowledge and workflow so I decided to make the investment.
Already I feel as if I've gotten my money's worth. Vegas is packed full of tools that I never had time to learn about let alone actually use. Flipping through the book I've already found clear explanations for tools and functions that I hadn't really used.
This is like attending a course. I'm going to through from start to finish although I've already installed the software--I'm breezing through the things that I already know but I'm still picking up some good tips and pointers. So far I'd recommend this book to novices and experienced users alike. This book is like having a personal trainer.
Each topic is discussed just long enough to explain the concept and an example or two, then moves on without beating the subject to death. This is the best learning method for me, just give me the concept. The author definitely has a deep understanding and expertise, and comes across in an honest and straightforward way. Not much bun and lettuce here, a lot of useful info and insights. The whole book is informative.
A "Workshop" is what it is. It's very focused on functionality. I'm a dikk, so if I say it's good, it's gotta be "damn good".
One person found this helpful. If you have any previous Vegas book, 6, 7 or 8, this one does not add a lot of new materials for you.
If you are new to Sony Vegas then it has added value, otherwise I would have to say, don't buy if you already have any previous books, since only 1 or 2 chapters may be interesting. Need more materials on DVD architect and also more advance editing technique and effect examples. So in recap, Yes on the book,if you are total new to Sony Vegas pro platform, if you are already familiar with it, questionable purchase. May be a good used book, if you can find it.
The author is very knowledge and do offer help on Sony forums, that's the reason I bought the book. I would never consider studying this book until I first studied the book that comes with the program. The accompanying Sony Vegas book is actually pretty good for the beginner. It takes the time to define terms and introduce the newbie to the basic functions and layout of Vegas Pro.
The author of this book clearly doesn't take the time to do that. If the author would like to make this book friendlier to the beginner, I would suggest that he sit down with someone who is new to Vegas Pro and perhaps new to video editing as well and see how it goes. I believe he would find that he needs to take more time clarifying terms, include more illustrations and clearly mark out the steps in numerical order that it takes to do something in Vegas.
In all fairness, Vegas Pro 9 is quite the program. It is very impressive in regard to what it can do. Trying to learn it out of a book could be problematic by its very complexity.
I finally got on the web and watched some demonstrations that really were really helpful for me to put the pieces together. If the author's goal was to primarily update former Vegas Pro users to version 9, and even give helpful suggestions for better video editing in general, he probably was successful at that. If he was hoping to include the rest into that picture, he clearly has a ways to go. He probably would do himself a favor and get better reviews if he would make it clear right from the beginning that this book really isn't practical for the beginner.
There is a lot of information in this book. I've yet to find anything I was looking for in the index. To find things I have to browse the book. In this day and age, not a good thing so I usually find what I want on the net. With that being the case, the book is of not much value. If you can find it used, I'd recommend it.
Just started using Vegas Pro a few months ago, and love it. I was looking for a book that introduced me to some of the non-intuitive portions of the program. This book is a fantastic knowledge source for Vegas users.
The author, Douglas Spotted Eagle, is a master of the program, and can explain Vegas very well. If you have ever searched any forums for Vegas tips or training, you've probably come across the name. The first chapter starts off with an entry-level introduction to the program, and each subsequent chapter builds on that in a logical progression. It has taught me a lot about Vegas, and has definitely made me a more efficient user of the software. If I was to have a complaint it would be that the index is not that robust.
